CONNECTICUT BALLET EXPANDS ‘NUTCRACKER’

SEASON AND ANNOUNCES MAJOR GUEST STARS

STAMFORD, CT ----- Artistic Director Brett Raphael has announced the expansion of the company’s Nutcracker run from one weekend to two at the Palace Theatre, Stamford Center for the Arts, during the upcoming holiday season and appearances by four of the ballet world’s most celebrated international stars. “Connecticut Ballet’s production is an annual holiday tradition in downtown Stamford and we are delighted to bring even more star power to this most loved of ballets,” stated Raphael.

Performances are December 17 at 1:00pm & 5:00pm, December 18 at 2:00pm, and December 23 at 7:30pm. Dancing the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and Her Cavalier will be Julie Kent and David Hallberg and Gillian Murphy and Jose Manuel Carreno. Ms. Kent and Mr. Hallberg will dance all performances on the weekend of December 17-18 and Ms. Murphy and Mr. Carreno will appear one night only on Friday, December 23rd. All but one are currently principal dancers with American Ballet Theatre. Mr. Carreno retired from ABT last June and is now making guest appearances around the world. David Hallberg was recently named the first-ever foreign-born dancer to join the renowned Bolshoi Ballet as a principal dancer and is known as one of America’s greatest classical ballet stylists.

A special Nutcracker Tea ‘n Sweets Holiday Party will be held between the two matinees on Saturday, December 17th. Sponsored by RBS, the event will benefit Connecticut Ballet’s educational outreach and production programs. Party goers ages four and up will have a chance to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy, dine on delectable holiday sweets, and receive a stocking stuffed with quality holiday gifts. Attendees will meet the Sugar Plum Fairy (guest star Julie Kent of American Ballet Theatre), dine on fresh crepes and ice cream sundaes prepared by Darlene’s Heavenly Sweets of Old Greenwich, and take home a holiday gift bag. Tickets for the Tea ‘n Sweets event are $50/person or $100.00 with the center orchestra ticket (plus theater surcharge).

 
 In celebration of the ballet’s annual Nutcracker season in downtown Stamford, several popular restaurants will offer a special 20% discount to patrons choosing to have lunch or dinner at their establishments. Upon presentation of a performance ticket stub, the following restaurants will provide a one-time dinner discount: Pellicci’s, Great Wall Restaurant, SBC Downtown Restaurant and Brewery, Tappo Restaurant and California Pizza Kitchen.

Vendors Prepare for DCA Holiday Boutique

Admission on both days is $5.00, the proceeds will go to benefit the philanthropic mission of the DCA, which includes offering scholarships to Darien High School students.

"A Civil War Christmas" Rowayton Historical Society Train Show and Open House

  • More than 11% of Fairfield County’s population is food-insecure.

 

  • The Food Bank provides nutritious food to feed the hungry in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford and Wilton . . . distributing more than 1 million pounds of food each year.

Darien’s Town Government Television station, Darien TV79, is conducting an online viewers’ survey of its programming.

“We are eager to hear from our viewers what they think of our programming,” says Program Director Jim Cameron.  “We’re especially interested in knowing which programs they’re watching and when they tune in.”

The survey is available online at www.kwiksurveys.com?u=DarienTV79Survey and takes just a few minutes to complete.   The survey will be available all month and survey results will be published when completed.

Serving Darien viewers for six years, Darien TV79 carries live and taped-delay coverage of all important town meetings including the Board of Selectmen, RTM, Board of Finance and other town boards and commissions.  In addition, the station also airs special programs in its “Inside Town Hall” and “Community Matters” series.

Darien TV79 is only available to subscribers of Cablevision, though many of its shows are also available on-demand via the town website, www.darienct.gov

Mammograms Available at Darien Rowayton Bank

Stamford Hospital's Mobile Wellness Center, a clinic in a large bus, will visit the Darien Rowayton Bank for convenient, fast, digital mammograms from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Appointments are recommended, although walk-in visits are accepted (remember to check with your insurance carrier to ensure digital mammograms are a covered benefit).

Private screenings are done on the coach bus, which is not wheelchair accessible.

Insurance is accepted, and no-cost mammograms are available to uninsured and low-income women.

Mammography guidelines: Women of ages 35-39, baseline (one); women over 40 years old, annually.

Even in the best of situations, all children experience some anxiety in the form of worry, apprehension, fear, dread or distress.  Anxiety disorders are very common and occur when a child's well-being or ability to function normally are impaired due to extreme recurring or persistent anxiety.  These disorders are common and can often be treated effectively within a short time.  This talk will review the most effective treatments for childhood anxiety disorders and introduce new approaches that are being developed and studied at the Yale Child Study Center.

The Darien HS Holiday Spectrum Concert

The Darien High School Music Department will be presenting their “musical gift to thecommunity” with a Holiday Spectrum Concert featuring all of the high school’s instrumental and choral ensembles in a one hour program of non-stop festive holiday music.

The Holiday Spectrum Concert will be held in the Darien High School auditorium on Thursday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m.  The program will last about one hour, there is no charge for admission, and all are encouraged to attend.  Doors will open at
7:00 p.m.

A Holiday SilentAuction sponsored by the Community Council to benefit the Darien Social
Services organization will take place in the DHS cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. justprior to the concert, and will features holiday gift items and services from
local businesses and the school community.
