HISTORICAL MUSICAL COMEDY OPENS at DARIEN ARTS CENTER

Special Rates Offered -- Bring the entire family!

HOT OFF THE PRESS!!! Darien Selectman Dave Campbell, as well as Superintendent of Darien Public Schools, Dr. Stephen V. Falcone to make special guest appearances as "new delegates" from Connecticut

The Darien Arts Center's Cabaret Theatre, kicks off its 2010/2011 season, in collaboration with Curtain Call Theatre, with the hit Broadway musical, 1776. The show will run two weekends, Fridays and Saturdays, October 15, 16, 22 and 23, at 8 p.m. A special matinee performance has been added for Sunday, October 17, at 2 p.m.

"Where can you find a truly revolutionary musical that will give you a new appreciation for the faces on our currency," asked Carole Claps, Darien resident and co-chairman of the Cabaret and the show's producer? You'll be an eyewitness to history as Ben Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and others help deliver a newborn nation, the United States of America," she said." But this birth will most certainly be a difficult one. There'll be plenty of behind-the-scenes politicking in the weeks leading up to the final vote on July 4, 1776. You may know how this story turns out, but you'll still be on the edge of your seat! 1776 is a riveting musical filled with history, humor, romance and even some dance. A true delight for the entire family to enjoy -- and to learn from!

And speaking of family, 1776 will be showcasing the acting talents of its First Selectman Dave Campbell as well as Superintendent of Darien Public Schools, Dr. Stephen V. Falcone in special guest appearances as the "new delegates" from Connecticut. Not to be missed!

"This has always been one of my favorite shows," said Lou Ursone, Curtain Call executive director. "The story is educational, inspirational and one that needs to be told," he added. The fact that the ideas espoused by leaders like Adams, Franklin and Jefferson were not embraced by all the colonies may be a surprise to some audiences. "Many probably don't realize how close we came to NOT declaring independence," Ursone said. The debate over slavery, which waged on for almost another 100 years, all but derailed efforts to free the colonies from Great Britain.

The story begins in May 1776 and tracks the debate among the delegates leading up to the drafting - and eventual signing - of the Declaration of Independence. The book is by Peter Stone with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards. Portions of the dialogue and some of the song lyrics were taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants of the Second Continental Congress and/or their spouses, as is the case with John and Abigail Adams.

This season opener for the Darien Arts Center's Cabaret Theatre is directed and choreographed, respectively, by Ridgefield residents Gordon Casagrande and Karen Casagrande. They have worked on the show several times and have a great love for the material. Other members of the production team include music director Chloe Sasson of Mt. Kisco; set designer Peter Barbieri, Jr. of Norwalk; costume designer Megan Latte Ormond of Stamford; and lighting designer Aaron Meadow of New York, NY.

There are many, many Darien volunteers involved in getting this show ready for its Darien opening. They include: Pat Atkins; Mary Crawford; Anne Wright; Pam Heckel; Cathy Oberle, Theo Osgood; Ruth Ann Ramsey; Carol Smith; Abbie Van Nostrand; Ben Chernin; and Jim Albert. Also, David Schwartz from Old Greenwich; and Linda Wilson and Toni DeCarlo from Stamford.

This Broadway musical hit is a great way to introduce history to younger members of the family but is also a terrific reminder of how fortunate we are to live in our great nation. John Adams, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson may be just names from a history book to many but they become real in this witty and engaging telling of the birth of our nation.

26th MAVIS FENNER MEMORIAL JURIED ALL-MEDIA EXHIBIT

OPENS OCTOBER 10 AT ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER

Works by outstanding artists from Connecticut and New York will be on display during the 26th Mavis Fenner Memorial Juried All-Media Exhibit from October 10 to November 7 at the Rowayton Arts Center. The RAC gallery at 145 Rowayton Avenue is open from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sundays.  Admission is free.

Award-winning artist Clyde Smith will select artwork for the exhibit and choose the winners from submissions by RAC members and non-members. The winning artists will receive cash awards during the opening reception from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 10. The awards will be presented by Mavis Fenner's daughter and granddaughter, artists Virginia and Cathy Bates, and grandson, musician David Bates.

Mavis Fenner and her husband, Ward, were involved with the Rowayton Arts Center from its beginning in 1960.  Following her husband's death in 1973, Fenner became the RAC curator, retiring at 82 because of injuries she suffered in an automobile accident.

Virginia Bates says, "Mother spent some of the happiest years of her life at the Rowayton Arts Center and made every visitor feel totally at home. She would have been thrilled to know that she would be remembered through an annual juried show that spotlights outstanding artists selected by a juror as renowned as Clyde Smith, whose varied career included designing Broadway theater posters in the '60s before moving on to portraiture."

Smith earned a BA at Dartmouth College, where he studied and worked with Paul Sample, and an MFA from The Art Center, College of Design, in Los Angeles. He is represented by Portraits, Inc., Wally Findlay Gallery and Eric & F.A.R. Gallery, all in New York City. In addition, his work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum. He was Artist in Residence at Dartmouth, taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City for 26 years and, for the past 10 years, has been on the faculty at Silvermine Guild Arts Center.

FALL BOOK DISCUSSION SERIES CONTINUES AT DARIEN LIBRARY WITH LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN

Location: Darien Library
1441 Post Rd, Darien, CT
When: October 12, 2010
Time: 7:00pm

The Fall Book Discussion Series, "The Butterfly Effect: Small Decisions, Epic Impacts," continues at Darien Library on Tuesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. The theme of the series is "The Butterfly Effect: Small Decisions, Epic Impacts." Taking the idea that one butterfly can cause a ripple effect on subsequent historical events (for example, the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil can lead to a tornado in Texas), the series will focus on stories where singular and seemingly small decisions change the course of lives forever. Library staff members will lead the discussions.

The discussion book on October 12 will be Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, winner of the 2009 National Book Award. Hailed as "One of the most electric, profound novels…in years"  by The New York Times, the critically-acclaimed novel is about New York City in the 1970s and the city's people, unexpectedly drawn together by hope, beauty, and the "artistic crime of the century" (Philippe Petit's cable walks between World Trade Center towers).

"Stunning…[an] elegiac glimpse of home…It's a novel rooted firmly in time and place. It vividly captures New York at its worst and best. But it transcends all that. In the end, it's a novel about families – the ones we're born into and the ones we make for ourselves." – USA Today

"It is a pre-9/11 novel that delivers the sense that so many of the 9/11 novels have missed: We are all dancing on the wire of history, and even on solid ground we breathe the thinnest of air." – Esquire

Let the Great World Spin is the second book of the Library's Fall Book Discussion Series. The first discussion book was Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.

The Library's Fall Book Discussion Series will continue with Room by Emma Donoghue on Tuesday, November 2 at 7 p.m., and The Passage by Justin Cronin on Tuesday, November 16 at 7 p.m.

The Library has copies of the books available for patrons to borrow, but prior reading of the books is not necessary to attend the discussions.
